Sonny used to whittle slingshots and little boats when he was a child in Fort Chipewyan.  Over the years he has carved a name for himself as an Aboriginal artist of exceptional skill and vision.  He is based in Fort Smith and describes his approach to carving as "working with the material's natural form and shape to remove what needs to be removed and release the carving within."

Sonny has carved for the Pope, the Queen of England, a number of past Prime Ministers of Canada, numerous dignitaries and for many visitors to northern Alberta and the southern NWT.  A visit with Sonny is to delve into the art of native storytelling, to learn about the wonders of the natural materials he works with, a chance to hear a few good jokes and an opportunity to view and purchase unique artworks found no where else.
