Elk Island National Park

Celebrate over 100 years of history at Elk Island National Park, where bison, elk, moose and deer still coexist and roam free, grazing on the rolling hills and seeking shelter under the aspen. The park has over 100 kilometres of trails and over 250 species of birds, including the rare trumpeter swan.

Homestead in Jasper National Park is one of a number of Métis dwellings which were located in the upper Athabasca river valley 100 years ago. The buildings here demonstrate the skill and ingenuity of the Métis who lived in the area before roads and railways were built.

Father Lacombe Chapel

In 1861, Father Albert Lacombe and his Métis helpers constructed a log building to serve the new St. Albert Roman Catholic Mission. This simple chapel, Alberta's oldest building, became the centre of the thriving French-speaking Métis settlement of St. Albert. The chapel has been restored to look much as it did in the early 1860s. The historical interpreters will take you back to an earlier time. Visit the burial site of Father Lacombe and Bishop Grandin. Stroll through the cemetery, the resting place of some of St. Albert's first residents.
