Fort Smith Mission Historical Park
The Roman Catholic Church expanded from Eastern Canada into the northwest as the fur trade opened up the North throughout the 1800's. Members of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate traveled spreading the word of God to the Aboriginal people.
With more missionaries arriving and the reception from the local people increasing, "the black robes", established missions right up to the Arctic coast. The Mission Historic Site is one of the larger missions complete with buildings and interpretive signage that describes the epic changes that took place in the North by the land and people.
